Washington State Legislature Establishes
New Online University
On April 22nd, the state of Washington established its first nonprofit, online university when Governor Chris Gregoire signed HB 1822, creating WGU Washington. The new university, developed through a partnership with Western Governors University, will be recognized as a state baccalaureate and master’s degree-granting university. WGU Washington will offer online, competency-based degrees and provide enhanced access to postsecondary education for Washington residents, including dislocated workers and placebound students.

American Sentinel University Graduate Named
Park Plaza Hospital CEO
American Sentinel University graduate and former DETC Outstanding Graduate Mr. John Tressa has been named by Tenet Healthcare Corporation as the new CEO of the Park Plaza Hospital. Tressa has served as the hospital's interim chief executive officer since January 2010, and had previously served as chief operating officer since 2006. As CEO, Tressa will oversee strategic, operational and clinical activities for the 444-bed acute care hospital located in Houston, Texas.

Hadley Instructor Geraldine Lawhorn Named 2011 Winnetka Teacher of the Year
For the past 40 years, Geraldine “Jerrie” Lawhorn has been an instructor with The Hadley School for the Blind, in Winnetka, IL. At 94, she is still teaching Hadley’s “Elements of Poetry” course. Jerrie is an inspiration to her students, colleagues, and just about anyone else she meets. Ms. Lawhorn was honored as the Winnetka, IL Teacher of the Year on May 4, 2011.
