A Continent of Possibilities: European Distance Learning
More than 60 distance learning executives, researchers, and scholars from Belgium, Norway, Holland, Spain, Germany, Austria, Finland, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom gathered in the flower region outskirts of Amsterdam to attend the European Association of Distance Learning’s (EADL’s) Annual Conference from May 9-11, 2012. Themed “The Profit Side of Learning,” the conference addressed a range of timely issues associated with distance education learning media, services, teaching, and business models.

Sessions College Debuts Revamped Online Graduation Experience
In recent years, many online schools and colleges have used online commencement ceremonies to bring a sense of conclusion and celebration to the end of the school year. Some colleges have experimented with slideshows of student names and headshots while others have attempted real-time online events. Some larger online schools even invite their students to attend a large event at a physical location. But recently, Sessions College for Professional Design launched a new online commencement experience.

DETC Institution Awarded Grant to Study Breakthrough College Completion Model
Next Generation Learning Challenges (NGLC), an initiative dedicated to improving college readiness and completion, recently announced $4.5 million in grants for comprehensive new secondary school and college models that use technology to reach targets for affordability and student success—and one DETC institution was the recipient of funds.

Barriers to Competency-Based Education May Be Lifting
Competency-based higher education’s time may have arrived, but no college has gone all-in with a degree program that qualifies for federal aid and is based on competency rather than time in class. Colleges blame regulatory barriers for the hold-up. The U.S. Education Department and accreditors point fingers at each other for allegedly stymieing progress. But they also say the door is open for colleges to walk through, and note that traditional academics are often skeptical about competency-based degrees.
