Survey Provides Insight Into Online Learners
The average student pursuing a postsecondary credential completely online is a white, 33-year-old woman with a full-time job and a household income around $65,000 per year, according to a new survey sponsored by two companies involved in online consulting.

In Memoriam: Former DETC Commission Chair Passes Away
Former DETC Commission Chair Fred F. Harcleroad, Jr. died June 10th at the age of 93. Dr. Harcleroad served as Public Member on the DETC Accrediting Commission from 1976 to 1985, and as Commission Chair from 1977 to 1985.

Study: For-Profit Grads at Wage Disadvantage
In analyzing the salary gains associated with various kinds of academic programs, advocates of for-profit higher education have noted that the sector's students tend to be less prepared for postsecondary work than are students in other sectors. A study released recently by the National Bureau of Economic Research agrees with that generalization. But it finds that, even when controlling for such factors, there is an advantage for the nonprofit sectors in boosting salaries, over the for-profit sector.

DoD Updates Enlistment Priority for Certain Education Credentials
The Department of Defense announced recently that eligible students with diplomas from virtual/distance learning institutions, adult/alternative schools, or who were home schooled—and who score 50 or above on the Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT)—will now receive Tier 1 enlistment priority.

Many Colleges and Universities Ramping Up Programs for Military and Veteran Students
A survey of 690 higher education institutions finds colleges and universities have increased services and programs for veteran and military students during the past three years. From Soldier to Student II: Assessing Campus Programs for Veterans and Service Members updates a 2009 study which provided the first national snapshot of the programs and services colleges and universities had in place to serve veterans and military personnel following passage of the Post-9/11 GI Bill in 2008.
