SOC's name with logo is registered with the U.S. Trademark and Patent Office as a service mark, and it may not be used without permission. Historically, SOC has not permitted member institutions to use the SOC service mark or "brand" on publications and brochures.
Some institutions have used the SOC service mark as a "good housekeeping seal of approval" in their marketing efforts, but SOC has not granted member institutions the right to use the service mark. Institutions may use text about being a SOC Consortium member, but may not, at this time, use the SOC logo on school literature or websites.
The SOC Advisory Board will be addressing the use of the SOC name/logo by member institutions as an agenda item this fall at its annual Board Meeting. If the Advisory Board decides to allow colleges to use the SOC service mark in their recruiting materials, an announcement will be made.
