ED's Proposed Rules on State Authorization Provoke a Reaction

Michael P. LambertAs the Distance Education and Training Council has been reporting during the summer, a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) on the HEOA Program Integrity issues were published for public comment on June 18th, with a cutoff date for all comments of August 2nd.

The proposed rules will implement that part of the Higher Education Opportunity Act (HEOA) of 2008 addressing what are called Program Integrity Issues, e.g., credit hour definition, misrepresentation, state licensure of institutions, ability to benefit testing, etc.

Department of Education, Smithsonian, FCC and USDA Announce Online Learning Registry at National Summit

More than 150 rural education stakeholders and technology experts from 26 states came together to learn from one another and provide feedback to federal officials recently at a National Rural Education Technology Summit in Washington, D.C. Federal leaders in education, content, and connectivity held up the work of rural superintendents, school leaders, education service agencies, and researchers as examples for leveraging technology to overcome distance and increase access to high-quality teaching and learning in rural schools.

Senate Veterans Affairs Committee Holds Hearing on Amendments to Post 9/11 GI Bill

The Senate Veterans Affairs Committee held a hearing last month to consider the views of several witnesses called to testify with regard to the proposed bill from Committee Chair Sen. Daniel Akaka (D-HI), designed to address defects in and offer curative ammendments to the original Post 9/11 GI Bill.

The Distance Education and Training Council is pleased to announce the Proposed Program for the Fall Distance Education Workshop now is available on the Fall Distance Education Workshop website! Through two days of engaging, motivating sessions, Workshop attendees will be able to:

  • ENGAGE in hands-on learning with some of today’s most popular social-media applications;

  • TARGET the future of distance education; and

  • CONNECT with fellow colleagues who share their commitment to the field.

Save the Date: DETC Announces Regional Meeting!

The DETC is pleased to announce a regional meeting in Irvine, California for DETC institutions and applicants. The meeting, hosted by California Southern University, will take place Tuesday, Sept 21.

The meeting will feature updates on the Washington scene and on DETC activities from Michael Lambert; and each attendee will have the opportunity to give a brief report on their institution. The Regional Meeting will begin at 10:00 a.m., and will conclude with lunch.

It will be an excellent opportunity for you to reconnect with old friends (and make some new ones!), build community and gain valuable insight from other DETC institutions and applicants. More information and registration will be available soon—stay tuned!
