The Continuum of eLearning (CoL) capability is designed to both fill gaps in individual training requirements and measurably improve and deepen the experiential learning effect of Joint training and exercise events. Specifically, the CoL is an individual, web-based training packaged designed to boost Joint military officers’ knowledge, skills, and attitudes associated with mission-relevant topics prior to a Joint exercise. It is different from traditional e-Learning in two ways: (1) it is adaptive, i.e., personalized to the needs of each trainee, and (2) it emphasizes the acquisition of deeper understanding versus simply basic declarative and procedural knowledge. In this presentation, we will describe the beta version of the CoL in more detail, and we will discuss its underlying philosophy (i.e., the “paradox of white space”). We are currently implementing and testing the beta CoL within the Joint military community; however, its rationale and associated lessons-learned are relevant across distributed training and education venues.
